“The Space Between Us” was one of the first photographs published in a Leica S editorial in 2016. The image reflects the distinctive style of photographic artist TINA TRUMPP, whose contemporary photographic art is characterized by a distinctly painterly aesthetic and a close connection to fine art photography.
At the center of the composition is a woman holding a fishing net—a motif that conveys both closeness and distance. The net is far more than a prop: it becomes a subtle boundary that symbolizes both separation and connection. It creates an additional visual layer in which perception becomes more fluid and meaning unfolds through suggestion rather than clarity.
The title “The Space Between Us” also refers to the composition of the same name by Scottish composer Craig Armstrong, whose atmospheric and emotionally complex music is characterized by melancholy and quiet intensity. Like his composition, the photography conveys a sense of distance, reflection, and emotional depth, and explores the invisible connections between people.
In this work, TINA TRUMPP makes the space itself the true subject. The distance between the figure and the viewer, between gesture and perception, is imbued with meaning, giving rise to longing, intimacy, silence, and tension. The invisible is given just as much weight as the visible.
Through light, composition, and atmosphere, emptiness is transformed into a powerful narrative element. Just as in music, where even silence can evoke emotion, “The Space Between Us” shows that distance is never empty, but is filled with memory, emotion, and an invisible bond.
As a work of contemporary fine art photography, “The Space Between Us” invites viewers to engage in a slow, contemplative observation—where the space between things becomes the true locus of meaning.
