In "From Above", photographer TINA TRUMPP presents an unusual, almost painterly perspective on the landscape surrounding Mont Saint-Michel. Rather than depicting the iconic structure itself, she focuses on the structures and forms of the surrounding area—seen from above, reduced to lines, planes, and movement.
The composition is reminiscent of a painting: waterways, sand, and natural patterns come together to form an abstract landscape that hovers between reality and painting. In TINA TRUMPP’s visual language, nature becomes a graphic surface in which light and structure create a calm yet complex order.

A place that is more than just its famous landmark
Mont Saint-Michel is one of those places you think you know even before you’ve been there. The striking monastery hill, rising from the vast Normandy landscape, has been photographed countless times—from every conceivable angle, at every time of day, and in nearly every kind of light.
Mont Saint-Michel has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Its extraordinary blend of medieval architecture, history, and unique landscape makes it one of France's most famous landmarks.
As a photographic artist, I, too, was immediately captivated by this special place. But precisely because the mountain itself has already been photographed thousands of times, I asked myself: What can I photograph here that hasn’t already been shown countless times?
A Different View of Mont Saint-Michel
I didn't find my answer in yet another traditional view of the silhouette of Mont Saint-Michel.
I wanted to shift my gaze—away from the famous subject and toward what unfolds beyond it.
So I climbed up.
The higher I climbed, the less Mont Saint-Michel stood out as a single subject. Instead, it became a vantage point in the midst of a seemingly boundless landscape.
An incredible expanse stretched out before me.
The Endless Landscape from Above
From the summit of Mont Saint-Michel, your perception of this place changes completely.
The famous abbey, the narrow streets, and the medieval walls fade into the background for a moment. Your gaze wanders over the landscape, across the mudflats, and along the ever-changing coastline.
What particularly moved me about it was that feeling of infinity.
The landscape seems to have no distinct beginning and no clear end. Water, sand, sky, and earth blend into one another. Depending on the tides, the scene changes constantly, making it clear that this place is not static.
Photography Between Vastness and Silence
It was precisely this vastness that became the real subject of my work.
In photography, I often look not just for a beautiful image, but for a mood, a feeling, or a perspective that evokes something in the viewer.
At Mont Saint-Michel, it was the vastness.
Instead of showcasing the famous Klosterberg as an imposing structure, I wanted to show just how small even this monumental building can appear when set against the backdrop of this landscape.
For me, the fascination lay in the contrast: here is a place that has drawn people for centuries—and at the same time, from here, a landscape unfolds that seems peaceful, almost boundless, and timeless.
A Change of Perspective as a Photographic Challenge
Especially when it comes to world-famous subjects, I find it exciting to deliberately step away from the obvious perspective.
After all, I could, of course, photograph Mont Saint-Michel the way almost everyone knows it: as an iconic silhouette against the sky, surrounded by water and mudflats.
But sometimes, photographic creativity begins precisely when you let go of the expectation that you have to depict a familiar subject exactly as it has been depicted a thousand times before.
So my gaze wandered from the mountain out into the distance.
And suddenly, Mont Saint-Michel told a different story.
Not just the story of a medieval monastery, but the story of a place nestled in the heart of a majestic landscape.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site from a Personal Perspective
Its status as a World Heritage Site makes Mont Saint-Michel a place of exceptional cultural and historical significance. But for me, as a photographic artist, its fascination lies on yet another level.
Such a place can mean something different to each person.
For some, it’s a historical monument; for others, an impressive travel destination. For me, it became a photographic invitation to take a closer look and shift my perspective.
Perhaps that is precisely where the special power of such a well-known place lies: You don't necessarily have to find a new subject. Sometimes it's enough to look at the familiar with fresh eyes.
My Personal View of Mont Saint-Michel
That's why Mont Saint-Michel inspired me not only because of its architecture, but above all because of the view from there.
The vastness surrounding the mountain made me pause. It drew my gaze away from the obvious and toward the horizon.
And perhaps that is exactly what has become my personal image of this place:
The focus is not on the famous mountain itself, but on the boundless world that unfolds from its summit.
A change of perspective—and suddenly you see one of the most photographed places in the world in a whole new light.
